Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, along with U.S. Senator Roger Marshall and Congressman Dan Crenshaw, has introduced the No Subsidies for Gender Transition Procedures Act. The proposed legislation aims to prevent taxpayer funding for gender transition procedures under Medicaid, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the Affordable Care Act.
The bill also seeks to eliminate the medical expense tax deduction for these procedures. Proponents of the bill argue that this could save taxpayers $200 million. Currently, Medicaid policies in 25 states and Washington, D.C., explicitly cover transgender-related health care. Over 276,000 of the 1.3 million transgender adults in the U.S. are enrolled in Medicaid.
“Taxpayers should never be forced to fund dangerous and irreversible gender transition surgeries,” stated Congresswoman Tenney. She emphasized that the act applies to both adults and minors across various federal funding streams to ensure no federal funds are used for these procedures.
Senator Marshall remarked on public sentiment regarding taxpayer dollars being used for gender transition procedures: “Americans overwhelmingly agree that hard-earned taxpayer dollars should not go toward paying for harmful gender transition procedures.” He added that the legislation fulfills a promise made by former President Trump and urged colleagues to support its inclusion in upcoming legislative packages.
Congressman Crenshaw commented on the motivation behind the bill: “Taxpayers shouldn’t fund dangerous, ideological experiments,” he said, emphasizing that healthcare decisions should be grounded in science rather than activism.
