Congresswoman Claudia Tenney announced that her bill to rename the post office at 80 Prospect Street in Avon, New York, in honor of fallen Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, has progressed from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s markup. Officer Mazurkiewicz served in law enforcement for over three decades, earning multiple awards before he was killed in the line of duty in July 2022. The bill has gained support from nearly the entire New York Congressional Delegation.
Officer Mazurkiewicz began his career as a Jail Deputy in 1988 and later joined the Rochester Police Department. His service included time as a Patrol Officer and eventual movement to the Tactical Unit in 2002. His career was marked by numerous accolades, highlighting his commitment to public service. He is survived by his family, including his wife Lynn Mazurkiewicz, who expressed deep gratitude for the proposed honor.
“Officer Mazurkiewicz was an American hero who dedicated 35 years of his life to upholding justice and the rule of law until he was tragically killed in the line of duty while serving our community. Renaming the Avon Post Office in his honor will not fill the gaping hole left in our community and his family’s hearts, but it will serve as a lasting tribute to his service and legacy. We are thrilled that this legislation has passed the Oversight Committee Markup and look forward to its consideration on the House Floor,” said Congresswoman Tenney.
“My husband exemplified the true meaning of public service, dedicating his life each day to protecting his community. We are deeply grateful to see this legislation move forward and sincerely thank Congresswoman Tenney for her leadership. Having the post office where our Tony grew up named in his honor will be a deeply meaningful tribute for our family,” said Lynn Mazurkiewicz.
