Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who represents New York’s 24th district in the U.S. Congress, announced that the House of Representatives has passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. The bill aims to strengthen federal election laws by requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and mandating that states remove non-citizens from voter rolls.
The legislation was approved by a narrow margin of 218–213 votes. It also introduces uniform photo identification requirements for voting in federal contests and allows citizens to take civil action if election officials do not uphold citizenship verification requirements. Penalties are established for officials who knowingly register non-citizens to vote.
Tenney stated, “As Chair of the Election Integrity Caucus, I have been clear that protecting the right to vote begins with safeguarding the integrity of our elections. The SAVE America Act reinforces a simple principle most Americans agree on: voting in federal elections is a right reserved for American citizens. This legislation strengthens transparency, restores confidence in our election system, and helps ensure that every lawful vote is counted and protected from dilution.”
Claudia Tenney has served as representative for New York’s 24th district since 2021 after replacing Anthony Brindisi. She previously served in the New York State Assembly from 2011 to 2016 and holds degrees from Colgate University and the University of Cincinnati.
She was born in New Hartford, New York, in 1961 and currently resides in Canandaigua.
