Congresswoman Claudia Tenney and Senator Joni Ernst have reintroduced a resolution to designate the week of June 23, 2025, as National Women’s Sports Week. This initiative coincides with the anniversary of Title IX’s passage on June 23, 1972, which has been pivotal in promoting equal access to sports for women and girls.
The legislation is supported by Representatives Randy Weber, Nancy Mace, and Ralph Norman. It aims to celebrate the achievements of female athletes and acknowledge the significant role of coaches and parents in their success. The resolution also highlights the impact of Title IX, noting a 990% increase in female participation in high school sports and a 545% rise in college athletics since its enactment.
“Women’s sports have empowered generations of female athletes to compete, lead, and break barriers,” said Congresswoman Tenney. She emphasized the importance of continuing advocacy to ensure equal opportunities under Title IX.
Senator Ernst remarked on the broader benefits of sports for young girls, stating: “Whether it’s growing as a leader, winning a championship, or securing a scholarship to college, sports open doors for young girls.”
Payton McNabb from Independent Women’s Voice expressed gratitude towards Senator Ernst and Representative Tenney for their leadership on this issue. She noted that Women’s Sports Week serves as a reminder of past gains and future challenges in maintaining fairness in women’s sports.
Carrie Lukas from Independent Women’s Voice highlighted ongoing concerns about fair competition in women’s sports. She thanked both lawmakers for their efforts to celebrate women and girls’ achievements during this designated week.
