Today in Wilson, New York State Senator Rob Ortt, alongside Assembly members and county leaders, addressed the ongoing challenges faced by volunteer fire departments. The recent fire at a grocery store in Wilson underscored the pressing issue of insufficient personnel among volunteer firefighters across New York.
Senator Rob Ortt emphasized the need for legislative action to support these critical community services. “I meet with dozens of volunteer firefighters throughout my district and they all tell me the same thing – they need more help,” he stated. The senator expressed his commitment to reintroducing legislation aimed at increasing volunteer membership statewide.
Assemblyman Angelo Morinello highlighted the financial impact of volunteers, stating that they save taxpayers approximately $4.7 billion annually. He affirmed his support for Senator Ortt’s legislative package designed to enhance recruitment efforts in both fire departments and emergency medical services.
Assemblyman Paul Bologna acknowledged specific challenges faced by rural communities in recruiting volunteers. “After the devastating fire in Wilson last week, we are seeing firsthand the need for more volunteers,” Bologna noted. He stressed the importance of developing solutions to support these essential first responders.
Steve Hawley, an assemblyman and life member of a volunteer fire department, described Western New York’s shortage as unacceptable. Hawley supported initiatives such as free tuition benefits for volunteers and tax credits for employers who hire them.
The proposed legislative measures include extending tuition-free courses (S2314), creating wage tax credits (S2720), establishing mileage reimbursement programs (S3527), addressing village fire company memberships (S3529), and authorizing municipal funding for firefighter training (S2008). These bills are currently under committee review.
