Governor Hochul and the Democrat-controlled Legislature have passed a $254 billion budget, which has drawn criticism from New York State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt. He argues that the budget is filled with excessive spending and political measures that do not enhance the quality of life for New Yorkers.
Ortt criticized the criminal justice reforms included in the budget, describing them as ineffective. He stated, “The so-called criminal justice ‘fixes’ are toothless,” expressing concern that these laws will allow violent offenders to evade accountability, thereby endangering public safety and law enforcement.
Additionally, Ortt highlighted concerns about a new business tax intended to support the MTA payroll. He warned that this could drive companies away from New York due to high operational costs. “The MTA payroll bailout or ‘new business tax’ could be the tipping point for companies,” he noted.
One of Ortt’s major criticisms was directed at a provision allowing taxpayer funds to cover private legal expenses for politicians. He labeled it as an example of corruption in Albany: “It’s Albany corruption at its worst.”
In conclusion, Ortt described the budget as both misguided and offensive, stating, “Democrats who hold all the levers of power in Albany are incapable of governing.” The Senate Republican Conference plans to continue advocating for reforms aimed at making New York safer and more affordable.
