On May 23, 2024, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) voted in favor of H.R. 192, a bill aimed at prohibiting non-citizens from voting in elections within the District of Columbia. The legislation, which Tenney cosponsored, passed the House with a vote of 262-143.

In 2022, Washington D.C. enacted a law permitting noncitizens who met specific residency and other requirements to participate in local elections. H.R. 192 seeks to repeal this law, which had been implemented on February 23, 2023.

"Illegal aliens who have broken our laws to enter our country should not be able to influence our policies or choose our elected officials," said Congresswoman Tenney. "Voting is one of the most sacred rights we have as Americans, and we must protect it at all costs. It was my privilege to support this legislation to ban illegal immigrants from voting in DC. I will continue working to safeguard our elections and ensure only American citizens have a say at the ballot box."
