Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, representing New York’s 24th District and chair of the Election Integrity Caucus, has reintroduced a bill aiming to halt the adoption of ranked-choice voting in federal elections. Supported by Congressman Mike Lawler of New York’s 17th District, the One Vote One Choice Act is designed to maintain a clear voting process.
Tenney emphasized that ranked-choice voting creates confusion and unclear results. “Not only does rank choice voting cause chaos and confusion, but it leads to distorted outcomes and results that do not demonstrate the will of the voters,” she stated. She advocates for legislation that ensures transparency and increases public confidence in elections.
Co-sponsor Lawler pointed to the lengthy delay in determining the winner of New York City’s 2021 mayoral primary as evidence of ranked-choice voting’s failings, which, according to him, undermines voter trust. “For centuries, citizens of the United States have been able to cast their votes with one vote and one voice,” he expressed. He believes that a ban on ranked-choice voting is necessary to uphold electoral integrity at the federal level.
The proposed legislation is part of an ongoing effort by its sponsors to preserve what they see as essential elements of the electoral process.
