Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who represents New York’s 24th district in the U.S. Congress, released a statement addressing the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on New York residents. The shutdown has entered its second week after Senate Democrats blocked a continuing resolution passed by House Republicans.
According to economic estimates, the shutdown could cost New York more than $1.2 billion each month. This situation is affecting wages, pausing loans, and threatening services that many families depend on. Thousands of federal employees in the state are either furloughed or working without pay. Small businesses are experiencing delays in receiving SBA loans and federal contracts, impacting local communities and suppliers.
Congresswoman Tenney stated: “Instead of protecting New York’s economy, Democrats are keeping it hostage, forcing working families, seniors, and small businesses to pay the price for their inaction.” She added: “Every month this shutdown continues, New York’s working families lose more than a billion dollars in productivity because Democrats refuse to govern responsibly. Nearly three million New Yorkers who rely on programs like SNAP and WIC, are facing uncertainty, while small businesses lose critical access to SBA loans and federal contracts,” continued Congresswoman Tenney. “Democrats’ political theater is punishing working families. It’s time for Democrats to end this reckless shutdown and join House Republicans in reopening the government.”
Tenney has represented New York’s 24th District since 2021 after replacing Anthony Brindisi. Before her current role in Congress, she served in the New York State Assembly from 2011 to 2016. She was born in New Hartford in 1961 and currently lives in Canandaigua at age 62. Tenney holds a BA from Colgate University (1983) and a JD from the University of Cincinnati (1987).
