Congresswomen Claudia Tenney of New York’s 24th district and Michelle Fischbach of Minnesota’s 7th district have reintroduced the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women Act. The bill aims to reinforce states’ authority to use Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds in support of pregnancy resource centers that offer services to pregnant women and new mothers.

The legislation was previously co-led by Rep. Tenney during the 118th Congress, when House Republicans opposed Biden administration rulemaking that could have limited states’ ability to direct TANF resources to these centers. The renewed effort coincides with Pro-Life Month, highlighting legislative priorities focused on supporting women, families, and unborn children.

“Women facing unplanned or difficult pregnancies deserve support, not government roadblocks or political agendas,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “Pregnancy resource centers provide medical care, parenting support, counseling, and essential supplies that help women choose life and care for their children with dignity. The Biden administration’s attempt to interfere with states’ use of TANF funds was an unacceptable overreach that threatened access to these vital services. This legislation ensures that Washington does not stand in the way of states that choose to support pregnant and parenting women, protect unborn children, and strengthen families. During Pro-Life Month and every month, standing up for life means standing with women, families, and the organizations that serve them.”

Claudia Tenney has represented New York’s 24th congressional district since 2021 after succeeding Anthony Brindisi. She previously served in the New York State Assembly from 2011 to 2016. Born in New Hartford in 1961, Tenney is currently a resident of Canandaigua. She graduated from Colgate University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati in 1987.
