Pendleton issued the following announcement on April 28.
On April 27, 2020 the Town Board unanimously passed a resolution banning all motorized vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles, from the Town-owned trail system. This ban takes effect immediately and runs through July 1, 2020. After a bit of deliberation, this decision was made for multiples reasons, but the main goal is to provide an opportunity for the Highway Department to safely perform maintenance and repairs on the trail system while still keeping the trail open for some activities, such as walking and bicycling.
Over the next couple of months the Town will be evaluating the trail’s physical condition as well as the rules and regulations outlining acceptable use of the trail system. For the future, our goal is to improve appearance, condition, and safety of this valuable asset that continues to see increased use. As the usage of the trail system has increased significantly since March, concerns for safety are of utmost importance and we will therefore also see an increased presence from multiple law enforcement agencies in the coming months on and around the trail system.
Finally, the Town Board endeavors to form a committee of residents who are interested in shaping the future of the Town’s trail system as well as helping to organize activities that will improve the trail’s appearance. We have seen what a difference volunteerism can make by viewing the trailheads of the Canalway Trail in Town. The dedication of the group responsible for the upkeep of these areas is admirable and we hope to find others who are equally dedicated to such a task to help with the Town’s trails.
Thank you for your time and updates will continue to be posted on the Town’s website and Facebook page as well as the Nextdoor.com website.
