Washington, DC – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) and Congressman Brad Schneider (D-IL) today led four bipartisan letters urging the United Kingdom, Australia, India, and Canada to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

In 2019, the United States designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization. The IRGC acts as an extra-military force operating outside of and above Iran’s traditional military channels. The IRGC carries out regime operations both inside and outside the country and provides direct support, weapons, training, and intelligence to terrorist organizations like Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and Palestine Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

 The IRGC has been instrumental in violently silencing dissidents and spreading regime propaganda within Iran. Externally, the IRGC carries out Iran’s terrorist operations, including assassinating regime opponents around the world. The IRGC’s Basij Force has been critical in the Mullah’s attempts to violently quash the ongoing protests.

Tenney is leading the charge in Congress to hold the IRGC accountable. She recently released a comprehensive report on the IRGC’s terrorism, which included a summary of its history, mission, and leaders that continue to violently oppress the people of Iran and conduct assassinations worldwide. In addition to her report, Tenney also recently introduced H.Res. 288, the Encouraging the EU to DESIGNATE Resolution. This bipartisan resolution calls for the European Union to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization. 

"Every day the IRGC is allowed to act without consequence is another day that this regime continues its campaign of terrorism in Iran and throughout the world," said Congresswoman Tenney. "The United States has taken bold action to raise the costs of the Iranian regime’s violent extremism, now the United States Congress is calling on the United Kingdom, Australia, India, and Canada to join our fight in combatting this organization's cruelty. It is time that all nations designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization to send an unequivocal message that its terrorist activities must end."
