Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) has voted in favor of the Equal Representation Act, a legislation that mandates the inclusion of a citizenship question in the census questionnaire. The Act also amends existing law to ensure that only citizens are counted when determining a state's population for the purpose of allotting seats in the House of Representatives and Electoral College votes.
The legislation was passed by the House with a vote count of 206-202.
Congresswoman Tenney expressed her support for the Act, stating, "States that have refused to enforce our nation’s immigration laws are now unfairly gaining additional representation in the House of Representatives and Electoral College." She further added, "Counting illegal immigrants as part of the apportionment process undermines the representation of every single American. The right to vote is sacred, and we must protect it at all costs. The Equal Representation Act safeguards our nation’s electoral process by ensuring only American citizens are counted when allocating congressional seats and Electoral College votes!"
