Sending the National Guard into subways to perform duties of the NYPD and into prisons to replace correction officers is not considered an optimal use of resources, according to Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt. He attributes this decision to what he describes as "the failed leadership of Governor Hochul and Senate and Assembly Democrats."

Ortt emphasizes that the focus should be on reinstating correction officers in prisons by ending HALT and committing to increased staffing. He warns that deploying the National Guard could exacerbate the situation, making it more dangerous.

"As a former member of the New York National Guard, I have the highest regard for these soldiers. However, this is not what they are trained for," Ortt stated.
