Washington, DC—Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today announced the passage of her resolution, H.Res. 288, the Encouraging the European Union (EU) to DESIGNATE Resolution, in the House of Representatives by a vote of 411-14.
The legislation specifically urges the European Union to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization under the European Union’s Common Position 931. The resolution received support from various organizations such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA), United Against Nuclear Iran Action, FDD Action, and the American Jewish Committee (AJC).
Congresswoman Tenney highlighted the importance of this resolution, stating, "The world must signal to the Islamic Republic of Iran that they will face severe consequences for their widespread acts of terrorism." She emphasized the need for the EU to follow the footsteps of the United States, which designated the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization in 2019. Tenney stressed that designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization would hold them accountable for their terrorist activities.
In response to a recent large-scale attack by Iran against Israel, Tenney emphasized the urgency of the EU designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization. She noted, "This is the first time Iran has ever attacked Israel directly from its territory and demonstrates the heightened demand for the EU to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization."
Tenney's efforts in pushing for the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist entity have included sending multiple letters to allies such as the United Kingdom, EU, India, Australia, and Canada. Additionally, she released a Report on IRGC Terrorist Activity to support her cause.
With the passage of the Encouraging the EU to DESIGNATE Resolution, House Republicans reiterated their commitment to standing against the Iranian regime and eradicating the IRGC. Tenney delivered remarks on the House floor before the bill’s passage, emphasizing the importance of this resolution.
The resolution's passage marks a significant step in urging the European Union to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization and hold them accountable for their terrorist actions.
