Congresswoman Claudia Tenney has reintroduced a bill aimed at recognizing the Finger Lakes Region as a National Heritage Area. This designation is intended to promote conservation, recreation, and economic growth in the area. In the Senate, the bill is being led by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
National Heritage Areas (NHA) are regions acknowledged by Congress for their natural, cultural, or historical significance. NHAs differ from national parks as they are expansive, inhabited regions that collaborate with communities to align heritage with local aspirations. Under this legislation, counties such as Cayuga, Chemung, Cortland, Livingston, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne, and Yates are included.
Congresswoman Tenney commented, “The Finger Lakes Region is known for its rich, robust history and natural beauty, making it an ideal candidate to become a National Heritage Area.” She emphasized the region’s significance to NY-24 and highlighted the potential benefits of the designation, stating that it would preserve the area’s history and stories. “It’s a privilege to reintroduce this legislation, and I am eager to see our region receive the recognition it deserves,” Tenney added.
