Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, representing New York's 24th district, has reintroduced a resolution urging the European Union to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This bipartisan effort, known as the Encouraging the European Union (EU) to DESIGNATE Resolution, is co-sponsored by Congressman Brad Schneider of Illinois and supported by several other representatives.
The resolution seeks alignment with the United States' stance on the IRGC, which was designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by President Trump in 2019. Congresswoman Tenney emphasized the need for collective action against the IRGC, stating: "To defeat the IRGC, which is responsible for sponsoring terrorist attacks against innocent civilians across the globe, the United States cannot act alone."
Congressman Schneider echoed this sentiment, highlighting Iran's global terror network and urging European allies to join in formally designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization. He stated: “The IRGC is the backbone of Iran’s global terror network... The U.S. and Canada have already acted, and I urge our European allies to join us.”
The resolution has garnered support from advocacy groups such as FDD Action and JINSA. Matt Kenney from JINSA noted that "the world is sleepwalking into a nuclear Iran" and called for a united front against Iranian aggression. Nick Stewart from FDD Action described the IRGC as "a key driver of instability and bloodshed in the Middle East," advocating for decisive action from Europe.
Julie Rayman of AJC expressed concerns about the IRGC's activities in Europe and its role in supporting terror networks globally. She thanked Representatives Tenney and Schneider for their leadership on this issue.
The legislation aims to send a strong message of unity against terrorism while encouraging swift action from European partners.
