Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, representing New York's 24th district, has led a congressional initiative, joined by eight fellow representatives, to send a letter to President Trump. This letter applauds his administration's actions aimed at dismantling Iran's nuclear weapons program. The communication expresses support for the President’s National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 and ongoing efforts stemming from the Maximum Pressure Campaign against Iran.
The representatives co-signing the letter include Derek Schmidt from Kansas, Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, Rudy Yakym from Indiana, Abraham Hamadeh of Arizona, Burgess Owens from Utah, Michael Baumgartner representing Washington, Mike Bost of Illinois, and Pennsylvania's Brian Fitzpatrick.
This political move coincides with the Trump administration's planned nuclear talks with Iran scheduled for the weekend starting April 12, 2025. The letter reiterates a shared Congressional viewpoint that Iran must not be allowed to continue developing or obtaining nuclear weapons.
Congresswoman Tenney emphasized the success of President Trump's Maximum Pressure Campaign during his first term, noting its impact on the Iranian regime's capabilities. "In his first term, President Trump’s Maximum Pressure Campaign delivered successful results, crippling the Iranian regime and limiting its ability to spread terrorism and malign influence across the globe," she stated.
She further stressed the significance of continuing this strategy, contrasting it with what she described as weaker policies under the previous administration. "By reinstating this strategy, the Trump administration is sending a strong message to Iran and the international community, reversing years of damage caused by the Biden administration’s weak policies that have emboldened the IRGC."
Nick Stewart, Senior Director of Government Relations at FDD Action, commented on Tenney's initiative, recognizing its timeliness. He stated, "Congresswoman Tenney’s leadership on this issue could not come at a more decisive moment. As a result of President Trump’s wildly successful maximum pressure campaign, the United States has tremendous leverage over the regime in Iran."
Stewart further added the importance of strategic deployment of this leverage for Iran's denuclearization. "No deal is far better than a bad deal that empowers this terrorist regime or leaves it with the means to ever reconstitute its nuclear program."
